Plans for a Morrisons supermarket at the former Focus DIY site in Babbacombe have been thrown out. A planning inspector has ruled the proposed Morrisons store would affect shopping areas in Babbacombe, St Marychurch and Wellswood. He also ruled the town hall car park site would be a better site for a supermarket.
The decision comes after a five-day public inquiry in October.
In January 2013, the council refused planning permission arguing the proposal at Babbacombe would undermine the vitality and viability of the town centre and local centres. The council said the proposal was contrary to national and local planning policies.
The inspector concluded in his report the town hall car park site is a preferable site to develop for food retail and is a viable, deliverable site. He also considered a supermarket on the town hall car park site would support the town centre.
