Plans for a new Morrisons supermarket at the Beagle site in Stony Lane were unveiled to residents in Christchurch – for the third time in August 2013.

Simons Group, which is handling the application on behalf of Morrisons, then withdrew an appeal over the refusal decision earlier this year.

Morrisons developer win appeal

Last month, a planning inspector allowed an appeal by Beagle over Christchurch council's refusal of the food store scheme. Inspector Alwyn Nixon, also ordered the council to pay partial costs, after he found them to have acted 'unreasonably'. His report criticised planning committee members, saying their reasons for refusal were unsubstantiated.

Detailed plans for Asda store well underway

Detailed plans for the approved Asda food store development in Christchurch are “well advanced”. Developer Quantum, whose development at Bailey Drive, off Barrack Road was approved in 2012, says they hope to submit their reserved matters application for the supermarket “very shortly”.

The Meteor Retail Park site off Somerford Road was refused permission earlier this year for revised plans. The appeal inspector has allowed the appeal, saying the proposals would not have a ‘significant adverse effect on the vitality and viability of the town centre’.

If granted permission, the supermarket on the site of Beagle Technology in Stony Lane will be the third to be given the go-ahead in Christchurch in the past 12 months. It is the third time the application, has come before the committee, having been refused twice in the past, with one of those decisions scrapped by the council and retaken before it was rejected for a second time.

There are now two floors instead of three, the building is now the same height as the existing facility and developers say they have moved the building to the back of the site away from the main road.
