Campaigning to curb supermarket power

Bedford, Bedfordshire

In 2012 Tesco sought permission to build a single and two-storey extension to The Crown pub in Britannia Road, opposite Bedford Hospital.

Planning officers recommended that Bedford Borough Council planning committee refuse the application saying that: “Permission has twice been refused for extensions to the public house to provide potential for A1 (retail), A3 (restaurant/cafe) and A4 (drinking establishment). “The first application was refused on grounds of the bulk, massing and architectural detailing of the proposed extension, inadequate vehicle and cycle parking and inadequate turning space within the site".

Application refused

The Borough Council refused  the plans to extend the building because of parking and traffic issues. Tesco has said it is not planning to appeal the decision but the site owner – Talten Business Park Ltd – has appealed a refusal of a separate planning application from August last year. It submitted the appeal in February which related to an application to extend the pub for a number of uses including drinking establishment, restaurant and shop use and is expecting a decision soon.
