Campaigning to curb supermarket power

Bovey Tracey, Devon

In Bovey Tracey, Devon residents are in the throes of a battle against a proposed Sainsbury's store on the edge of our small rural town.

According to the flyer distributed around the town in December 2011, the land earmarked by Sainsbury’s for their new store, is subject to a covenant that the Town Council signed up to in 1996, agreeing not to use the property for any purpose other than the provision of community facilities.

At the end April 2012 legal advice on the covenant covering town council owned land at Le Molay Littry Way, Bovey Tracey, finally came through. In effect, putting a supermarket on the site would be possible, but not necessarily practical.

Residents set up a campaign group Bovey FACE (Fight Against Community Exploitation)  to oppose the plans.
