Tesco submitted plans for a petrol forecourt at its new Farnworth store at the eleventh hour. The proposals were submitted at the start of May and if approved the station will open by Easter 2012. The filling station will also have a shop attached to it and take up between 100 and 200 of the planned 450 parking spaces at the new 6,500 sq m store in Longcauseway. The original plans for this large store were approved in February 2010 and the store opened in August 2011.
Nearly 100 people signed a petition against the filling station. Campaigners are angry that no mention of a petrol station was ever mentioned at the community and forum meetings about the new Tesco. Residents are concerned that the forecourt will cause further congestion, pollution and noise problems and that there is no need for a filling station as there is already a BP station 100 metres from the new superstore.
