Campaigning to curb supermarket power

Ore, East Sussex

We are trying hard to keep a Tesco Express from opening up in the former Oddfellows Arms Pub in Ore Village.

Ore Village currently has many small independent traders and a small Co-Op store. A group  'Save Ore's Shops say No to Tesco' has set up a petition which has now been signed by over 1,800 local residents and was presented at a public meeting on the 13th December 2012.

A planning application HS/FA/12/00976 has been submitted to Hastings Borough Council (HBC) by Tesco.

Despite the application being given a green light many residents still fear for their safety and that of the many children who will now have to negotiate the extra traffic congestion and the increase in on the pavement parking which occur as a result of not allowing for any extra parking in the vicinity of the store, East Sussex Highways did not even bother to carry out a traffic survey even though many residents had asked for this to be done, their excuse is that it will be covered by added conditions. We are now awaiting yet another planning application by Aldi who intend to demolish and redevelop our very busy B&Q in Rye Road, we are fighting along
with other local groups and supporting B&Q on this one as Aldi have purchased the site and lease even though B&Q's lease does not run out until the end of June 2013. Yet again it's up to the local planners to decide, and possibly another blow for the small independent traders of Ore Village.
