Allenton in Derby still has a vibrant local shop based High Street. In 2005 local residents and traders mounted a campaign to stop Tesco taking over the site of the outdoor market and a nearby closed pub, the Mitre, to build a new supermarket. Over 1,000 people signed a petition against proposals to demolish the pub and the adjoining market and houses in Whitehurst Street to make way for the supermarket.
In February 2010, Tesco approached Councillors and traders about its plans. In May, Tesco held a public consultation about the plans for the new store and submitted a planning application to the city council for a 65,000sq ft store and petrol station on the site of the Mitre pub, together with a market, which would replace the existing larger one in September.
