Tesco wants to open a store on the High Street of Olney. It did not need planning permission for the store as the site was already registered for retail use. The site is in a conservation area, and residents and Councillors expressed opposition to the store, and the fact that they were not aware about the plans.
Councillors ruled the new store would have a “substantial” impact on other Olney shops, traffic and parking. The countryside site was also contrary to planning policies.
But certain conditions would be passed on granting permission for the store – including the store not being able to sell clothes or operate a pharmacy or cafe – to protect the vitality of the town centre.
Sainsbury's is hoping to build a 20,000sq ft store.Public consultations will be held to give information about the planned works, which would be on former quarry on land at Warrington Road and Lavendon Road and has planning permission for a car showroom, garage and petrol station.
