Bathwick Street, Bath

A campaign group is opposing plans for a new Tesco Express on Bathwick Street. The plans were refused by the local council twice, but were then approved by central government. However, the planning inspector approving the plans did recognise that the development would have an adverse impact on road safety, and imposed a planning condition requiring Tesco to make safe the surrounding roads. On the 5th March 2008 Bath and North East Somerset Council rejected an application by Tesco to open the store before the surrounding roads are made safe.

The site is next door to an independent grocery store that has been there for 20 years. The campaign group organised a well-attended community meeting on the 7th January 2008, and successfully objected to an attempt by Tesco to extend the store's liquor licensing hours beyond its opening hours
