Since 2004 there has been widespread opposition to large-scale development plans submitted by a developer and backed by the Council for Dartford town centre, for a 100,000 sq ft Tesco Extra hypermarket, other retail units, and a new access road through central park.

In February 2013 Dartford Borough Council criticised Tesco for not starting construction.
