In 2009 revised plans for a Tesco Extra store on the site of the old B&Q in Short Street were given the go-ahead by the council’s cabinet. The proposed superstore was downsized and plans to build homes as part of the scheme were abandoned. Tesco applied to build a store and 323 car-park spaces at the front of the Martello Caravan Park in Walton. Campaigners from the Save Walton Mere group said the plans would “devastate” the area.
