900 people signed a petition against plans for a new Tesco Express store on the site of an old filling station in Trethomas. The store would become the fourth Tesco store within approximately a five mile radius -Tesco has a store in the centre of Caerphilly and a Tesco Express on the outskirts in Pwllypant. Tesco's planned to extend its Ystrad Mynach store with more shop floor space, a café, staff restaurant and a two-storey glass atrium linking the building with the car park were approved in 2010 after an appeal on an earlier refusal.

In November 2009 Caerphilly County Borough Councillors refused the application.
