Campaigning to curb supermarket power



Tesco has been in Malaysia since 2002, and had 45 stores by 2012. Tesco’s business is geared towards hypermarkets, which constitute most of its stores.

Its average floorspace, at 84,000 sq ft as of April 2012, is one of the highest in the world for Tesco. In December 2006 Tesco was cleared to buy the Makro chain stores, adding further outlets to its hypermarket portfolio. In February 2012, Tesco announced that it was seeking to raise £370 million on the stock market to fund further expansion.
