A three day appeal hearing began in November into Morrison's plans to expand its store in Braintree Road, Witham.
Following the refusal in February Morrisons lodged an appeal with the Planning Inspectorate in June.
Lidl has announced that it will be holding a public consultation day to outline its plans for the new store in Bridge Street, Witham, on the site of the former Bramston Sports Centre. Lidl proposed purchasing the old school sports centre site and replacing it with a store in June 2016, with Braintree Council supporting the plans at the time.
Morrisons, on Braintree Road, Witham, received planning permission in February 2014 to expand the store by around 70 per cent after a planning inspector overruled Braintree Council. Earlier this month, Peacock and Smith submitted new planning applications on behalf of Morrisons to Braintree Council, asking for the approval on several details reserved on the original planning application.
In his report, the inspector stated he believed there would be initial detriment to the town centre, including the loss of jobs if the store was expanded, but that the town centre was healthy and the potential for new jobs at Morrisons counter-balanced this impact.
Plans to extend the store by 70 per cent were refused as Councillors believed it would damage the town centre Tesco store and associated trade, and the plans to revamp the Newlands Shopping Centre.
