Campaigning to curb supermarket power

Windsor, London

In May 2012 a couple who have run a Londis store for 21 years fought plans by Tesco to open a Tesco Express on the site of the closed Three Elms pub opposite. Tesco did not need planning permission as turning a pub into a convenience store is not counted as a change of use. But it made a "minor works' application to the Royal Borough to allow changes to be made to the old building.

Three out of five of Tesco's applications turned down

Three of the five planning applications Tescot has submitted to facilitate converting the former Home Store, in Peascod Street, into a Tesco Express have been turned down by the Royal Borough. Council planning officers believe the proposals, which include installing exterior signs, changing the new shop front and refurbishing the front of the unit including the clock, are harmful to the area and the listed building.
