Campaigning to curb supermarket power

Wigan, Lancashire

Residents in Wigan are opposing Tesco plans to open an Express store on the site of the Alexandra pub as it is directly opposite the entrance to the Canon Sharples Primary School. Campaigners say that aside from the risk to pupils of the increased traffic there is also a highways problem because the entrance any customers would use is on a blind bend and falling gradient on both sides.

Planners recommended approval.  But under the planning laws they don’t need a change of use’ application to re-open the building as a supermarket, but they do need permission if they have to alter the building “significantly”.

Tesco mothballs store

Tesco has pulled out of a shop opening just weeks before the launch date. Work had been nearing completion of a unit on Walthew Lane, Platt Bridge. The local press reported that there was conflicting information circulating about what happens next to the unit on the Walthew parade: one source saying that there were hopes to still have a Tesco presence, albeit a smaller one, there; another that the company was looking to find another operator for the site.
