Campaigning to curb supermarket power

Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire

Proposals for a multi-million pound development on the Broadwater Road site in Welwyn Garden City included plans for a "medium sized" Tesco store were refused in January 2012. Tesco confirmed they will not appeal this decision.

This followed the submission of a petition of 14,125 names against the Tesco scheme by the Welwyn Garden City Society that had led the campaign from the outset. This is the largest petition ever mounted in the UK against any supermarket led development.
