Campaigning to curb supermarket power

Welton, East Yorkshire

In March 2010 Tesco announced plans to build a store and petrol station in Welton. The new store is earmarked for Common Lane, Welton and Tesco has an agreement in place to buy land from salad vegetables producer Humber Growers, currently occupying the site, subject to planning permission being granted for a supermarket.

Local residents opposed the scheme because of concerns around potential traffic congestion as access to the development would be from Common Lane and close to the Brough junction on the A63. Welton Tesco Fighters (WTF) was formed in response to Tesco's second application.
