Tooting & Furzedown residents are opposed to plans by Tesco to try to take over The Wheatsheaf pub.
A Twitter and facebook campaign is growing and there is a petition on 38degrees.org with over 2,500 signatures - http://you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/save-the-wheatsheaf-tooting-bec
The current situation is that the lease has expired and the present tenant Gregarious (formerly Antic) are on 24hr closure notice. Gregarious want to buy the lease but each bid has been outbid by Tesco's who are throwing money at it. Only a few hundred metres down Upper Tooting Road, and up Balham High Road there are another two Tesco's convenience stores.
Tooting is fortunate to have a diverse range of shops, and a lot of independent traders. We need to show the council (and Tesco's) the amount of support that exists to keep this community asset.
