Campaigning to curb supermarket power

Wakefield, West Yorkshire

In October 2013 Wakefield Council's planning committee voted to back officers’ recommendations that the 24-hour Tesco Extra planned at Ings Road would damage city centre trade and cause chaos on the road network. The committee agreed that the 10,000 sq m store would draw shoppers away from an already struggling city centre. Tesco lodged an appeal claiming the council was taking too long to process its application.
