Campaigning to curb supermarket power

Urmston, Manchester

The owners of the Trafford Centre, Peel Holdings, submitted an application to build a 7,000 sq m supermarket on land at the Trafford Retail Park.

Local traders feared another new supermarket would "kill-off" the town centre and would be in direct competition with the redeveloped Urmston town centre. They also fear the new supermarket will cause further congestion on Lostock Circle.

Over 200 letters of objection were received against the application while Salford Council had already opposed the application on the adverse impact it would have on Eccles. Concerns raised included the increase of traffic problems around Trafford Park, the economic impact on Urmston Town Centre and the affects on residents living nearby of noise, light and environmental pollution.
