Campaigning to curb supermarket power

Tunbridge Wells, Kent

Tesco wants to open an Express store in the Kelsey Arms, in St John's Road.

In an application delegated to planning officers, Tesco promised only "low impact subtle alterations" to the front of the landmark building. With only limited increase in floor space, Tesco has not had to provide planners with a detailed design and access statement.  Tesco plans to install plant equipment to the rear and an ATM cash machine at the front, where high visibility and lighting will provide added security for users.

Local independent traders say they are worried that the arrival of another supermarket just a stone's throw from Sainsbury's and Marks and Spencer at the petrol station could mean the death knell for their businesses.
