Tesco first announced plans to build a 30,000 sq ft store in the town in March 2009.
The Treorchy and District Chamber of Trade has expressed concern about the plans and fears for the future of independent retailers.
The Chambers of Trade of the Upper Rhondda have come together to fight the proposal, fearing that Tesco will destroy Treorchy and surrounding areas. The main reasons for the objections are the fear that the giant chain will result in shops closing and job losses that will far outweigh any job creation offered by Tesco. Campaigners also believe there would be increased traffic congestion which is already problematic, with conditions worsening to an intolerable and unsafe level. Objection letters are still being submitted to the Chamber on a daily basis, showing that residents of Treorchy want to keep their high street and do not want the big chain to come to Treorchy.
