Campaigning to curb supermarket power

Stretford, Greater Manchester

In July 2009, Lancashire County Cricket Club ran a series of consultation events about plans to redevelop the "cricket ground and environs", which include a new 168,000 sq ft Tesco store. A group " No Mega Tesco" was set up to oppose the plans.

Trafford council approved the Tesco application on the 11th March 2010. On 29th September the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Eric Pickles, confirmed that the application wouldn't be called-in for further review.

However in December 2010 Lancashire County Cricket Club faced a late legal challenge to its plans from property company Derwent Holdings Ltd, owners of nearby White City retail park, who are seeking a judicial review. The judicial review is challenging the subsequent granting of planning permission, claiming Trafford Council had acted illegally. A public inquiry was held in Manchester on 28th February 2011.

On 10th March the court dismissed the action of Derwent Holdings which means the development can now go ahead. Please see an article at Messenger Newspapers, 11th March 2011. However, Derwent was given leave to take the case to the Court of Appeal in London and a hearing took place on 4th July 2011. Judges came down in Lancashire's favour at the High Court.
