Secretary of State throws out Tesco's plan

The decision has been backed by residents, who had raised concerns about the impact of extra traffic, including pollution, road safety dangers and noise from the 24-hour store. In his judgment, the Government inspector ruled that an extended store "would likely result in a decline in Newcastle town centre trade/turnover".

Plans approved

Stoke-on-Trent City Council approved Tesco's planning application, against the advice of its own officers,
