Campaigning to curb supermarket power

Stalybridge, Lancashire

In 2008 Tesco in Stalybridge planned to submit an application to increase the size of its store by adding a new mezzanine floor and more parking space.  A new campaign group, SayNO2Tesco, was set up to fight the plans.

Over 300 people attended a public meeting at Stalybridge Civic Hall in August 2008 to discuss the plans. Tesco failed to send a representative. Please see an article in the Tameside Reporter. Tesco eventually withdrew the application.

In November 2010 it was reported that Tesco is believed to be in talks to move its Stalybridge store – to an even bigger site in the town. Please see an article in the Tameside Advertiser, 11th November 2010.
