Campaigning to curb supermarket power

St James's Street, Brighton

In March 2011 Sainsbury's was refused an alcohol licence for a new store on St James's Street because Brighton and Hove City Council's licensing committee decided the plans could have had an impact on alcohol fuelled disorder in the city. Objections were received from residents, police and councillors.

A campaign group No More Supermarkets in Kemptown was set up and they organised a demo in July to coincide with the opening of the store.
