Campaigning to curb supermarket power

Southborough, Kent

Tesco owns 0.18 acres of land in London Road at the site of the former Bell Inn pub, but in order to open a superstore and close its smaller Express store, it needs the town council to agree to sell the Ridgeway Playing Fields.

A public meeting was held in April to discuss the plans and a campaign group "Say No to Tesco in Southborough" has been set up. Southborough residents questioned the validity of a Tesco traffic study claiming that traffic surveys were undertaken during the half-term holiday.

In March 2012 town councillors unanimously agreed to throw Tesco's plans out and not sell the Ridgeway Playing Fields. At an extraordinary town council meeting on 22nd March, members agreed the impact on the community would have been too great, and so ended ten years of speculation about a supermarket being built on the land.
