Campaigning to curb supermarket power

Saxmundham. Suffolk

In 2010 Saxmundham faced another planning application for a Tesco store on a site immediately opposite the existing Waitrose and across a narrow road, 100 yds from a tricky crossroads with traffic lights and in the opposite direction, a few hundred yards away, planning permission for 150 plus houses.

The site is a series of derelict buildings owned by a developer. He applied for an 8,000 sq ft store 2 years ago and permission was given. In 2010 he applied to Suffolk Coastal District Council's Development Control Committee for a much larger store (18,000 sq ft), which the Councillors passed unanimously. For more information please see an article in the East Anglian Daily Times, 2nd April 2010.

The new Tesco store opened in June 2012. An article in the Guardian, 13th April 2012 "Tesco tussle over Saxmundham store keeps supermarkets in the spotlight".
