Campaigning to curb supermarket power

Sandy, Bedfordshire

Local residents have organised a petition against a the plans for a Tesco store opening in Sandy. The main concern is that a new supermarket will detract from the main shopping centre and result in a severe loss of footfall thereby creating a ghost town. Campaigner Clive Porter, who has helped traders to defend themselves against large chain supermarkets for 12 years has set up a petition that has been signed by 30 traders in Sandy, Potton and Gamlingay.

At the end of March a report to Councillors recommended that planning permission be granted for the proposed new Tesco supermarket in Sandy despite the fact agreement would contravene the council’s own planning policy for the land on the old RKB factory site in New Road.
