Campaigning to curb supermarket power

Sandiacre, Derbyshire

Tesco was granted permission for a new 24 hour 4,000 sqm eco store opposite the existing Lidl supermarket in Station Road, as part of a redevelopment of land alongside the Erewash Canal.

Many residents and shopkeepers were concerned by the plans and a campaign group, A Future for the Sandiacre Community, was set up. In January 2010 the group commissioned a survey and more than 90% of those surveyed said they were against Tesco opening.

Despite withdrawing it's first application Tesco submitted a new proposal later in 2010 and  Erewash Borough Council approved the plans at the end July 2011.
