Campaigning to curb supermarket power

Rhoose, Vale of Glamorgan

Tesco opened an Express store on the site of a former pub in Rhoose in November 2010. No planning application was needed because Tesco was only carrying out only minor alterations to the interior of the former pub. However, the plans sparked concern among small traders and many residents in the village, who signed a 1,000-name petition against it and asked for the plans to be "called in” for discussion by Councillors.

Tesco's conversion work was stopped because Vale of Glamorgan Council planning enforcement officers ruled minor plans for exterior alterations to the building, including the cash-point machine, needed another look. Tesco was told that it must submit a planning application for the machine to be installed.
