Sainsbury's had an option to buy and develop land, an ex paper mill, on the edge of the town, but abandoned plans in April 2013.

Ramsbottom is a small market town in East Lancs, a population of 11,500 with three supermarkets alread. The town is full of independents with no high street clones, a few charity shops, and retail occupancy is around 90-95%.
