In March 2008 Waitrose submitted a planning application for a 16,000 sq ft store. A new group, Poynton Against Large Supermarkets organised a gathering on 12th April adjacent to the proposed site. A Parish planning meeting considered the Waitrose application on 16th April, and the full application was considered and approved by the Borough Council on the 6th May 2008.
However, campaigners celebrated when Macclesfield Borough Council rejected Tesco's plans for a new store. A campaign group Poynton Against Tesco had opposed Tesco's plans for a new 17,000 sq ft store, which included 110 parking spaces. The proposed site was a Texaco garage, car showroom and former cinema on London Road South.
