Campaigning to curb supermarket power

Penketh, Warrington

A special meeting to discuss potential plans for The Sportsmans Arms pub to be demolished and replaced with a Netto supermarket has taken place.

A planning application has not yet been received by Warrington Borough Council for the development but that the discount supermarket chain has been in touch with the parish council to confirm that a planning application would be submitted shortly.

The parish council has noted the 'overwhelming support' for the campaign to save the The Sportsmans Arms and that a group of residents were in the process of making an application to protect the pub and hoped to register it an asset of community value.

Residents have strongly criticised the plans and one neighbour said: “If the council care about the people who elected it, they will turn down this application from a rapacious and uncaring company. The campaign group, Save the Sportsmans Arms, has also applied for the pub to become an Asset of Community Value and if the ACV is approved it could delay planning permission and enable the community to explore other options for the pub.
