Campaigning to curb supermarket power

Orton Wistow, Peterborough

On 2nd July 2012 The Chequers opened for the last time. A few weeks prior residents discovered that it had been sold, and there were rumours that Tesco had bought it. They vehemently denied this to the local press saying they had no intention nor did they have any plans for purchasing The Chequers. However, Tesco then wrote to residents and the adjacent convenience store advising that they will be converting the public house to an express store.

A petition was set up to highlight local residents’ and businesses’ opposition to a Tesco's plans to build a new store.
