A campaign group Moreton Against Sainsbury's Superstore Action Group (M.A.S.S) has been set up against a new Sainsbury's superstore planned to be developed on the town boundary of Moreton in Marsh, Gloucestershire.
It's a grotesque development 'plonked' onto a green field site, close up to town border (backing onto several residents' gardens). It includes a petrol station and cafe as well as parking for 262 cars, all of which will have a terrible effect on the town's existing local businesses. We already have a sizable supermarket at the other end of town (Budgens) which is very supportive of the local community and suppliers. We also have a good-sized Tesco 4 miles up the road in Stow on the Wold, so we are already well-served with supermarkets in the immediate local area.
Nearly 300 letters of objection were received by planners, and a petition signed by 801 people opposing the application was sent to the council. The Campaign to Protect Rural England also objected, saying building on the land, which was "substantially waterlogged" last winter, would increase the risk of floods.
