Campaigning to curb supermarket power

Llanrwst, Conwy Valley

Llanrwst is a small vibrant market town.  Residents believe that Tesco has purchased land that Conwy County Council had earmarked as a recycling centre, and are concerned about the impact a supermarket will have on the town.

In February the North Wales Weekly News reported that a leaked council report has confirmed that Tesco will be opening a 28,000 sq ft store in Llanrwst. The document states that Conwy County Council was aware of the town being earmarked for development by Tesco as early as December 2010, with draft plans being adopted by cabinet on January 11, 2011.

In February 2012 around 150 people attended a public meeting to voice opposition about the plans.  Local traders fear a supermarket on the outskirts of the town would pull people away from the centre and kill off business. Residents opposing the plans have set up an online petition and a campaign group formed in May.
