Campaigning to curb supermarket power

Leiston, Suffolk

In November 2010 Tesco announced plans to open a 20,000 sq ft store in Abbey Road, Leiston, next to Jewson. Leiston Business Association is concerned about the impact of the proposed store’s location - which is away from the High Street - would have on traders. The fear is that the position will draw shoppers away from the town centre. They are urging Tesco to find a more appropriate site that would keep footfall in the town centre. Many residents are also concerned about the plans and a "Lay Off Leiston" campaign group has been formed.
