Tesco wants to build an Express store on the corner of Pier Street and Marine Parade West but Lee Business Association fear it will hit their trade. They organised a strong campaign against the plans including a silent protest on the seafront, on 26th June 2011.
Gosport Borough Council granted planning permission for developers to turn Pier House into 14 flats and two retail units in November 2010. A retail licence was granted but there a number of small planning applications for a cash machine at the store and new signs are currently being considered.
A planning meeting was held at Gosport Town Hall on 22nd November 2011 to deliberate over 4 final planning applications for a Tesco Express to be installed within Pier House, which is in a Conservation Area. One application, objected against by the Lee Business Association and supported with the objection, by the Lee Residents Association, was to install roof plant for a condensing and air conditioning units. However, at the vote following the planners 'compromise' and despite the contravention, the plan was approved.
