The Borough Council is considering selling or leasing several parcels of land in Hunstanton. One piece is the field between Tesco and the cemetery being earmarked for sale to Tesco for additional car parking, if the borough council decides to grant planning permission for the store to double in size.
Several town councillors expressed opposition, pointing out that Tesco already has an unfair advantage over shops in the town centre, because customers have three hours free parking, while waiting time in and around the High Street is limited to 45 minutes. It was also suggested if Tesco widened the range of products on sale it could result in the closure of several town centre shops.
In early July 2012 Tesco held a public exhibition of the plans.
