Campaigning to curb supermarket power

Holmfirth, Kirklees

At the end of November 2008 Tesco revealed plans to build a store on a former garage site it owns in Holmfirth.

A public meeting, organised by the Holme Valley Business Association, was held in December and an action group, " Keep Holmfirth Special", was formed to oppose the plans.  For further information please see an article in the Huddersfield Daily Examiner, 29th December 2008 and the Huddersfield Daily Examiner, 10th April 2009.

Following a new application from Tesco traders boarded up their windows, saying the future could resemble a “ghost town” if Tesco is allowed to build an out-of-town supermarket. For more information please see " Last of the Summer Wine town fears Tesco will ruin its charm", the Guardian, 27th June 2009 and "Summer Wine town fights Tesco", the Yorkshire Post, 1st July 2009.

Sainsbury's announces plans to open a convenience store

Sainsbury’s has announced it plans to convert a partially disused shopping centre into a convenience store. The company has submitted a planning application to Kirklees Council to convert the ground floor of the Riverside Shopping Centre, Huddersfield Road, Holmfirth, into a Sainsbury’s Local.

13 September 2013
Appeal dismissed

The Planning Inspector John Gray has dismissed the application, largely on highways issues. In his report Mr Gray raises the issue of further traffic on Penistone Road, saying: “... the fact that the Penistone Road junction is already operating above its capacity is not an adequate reason for adding more traffic to it, even a relatively small amount, when it is not at all clear how or when an appropriate solution will come forward.

Public inquiry starts

Last year Kirklees Council rejected a planning application from Tesco due to the location and size of the proposed store. It was thought that not enough consideration had been given to the impact on traffic and how easy it was to access for those without a car. A planning inspector will hear arguments for and against the supermarket during the inquiry.
