Campaigning to curb supermarket power

Herne, Kent

Tesco withdrew its plans to buy an old village pub, the Upper Red Lion pub, to turn it into a Tesco Express.

A City Councillor set up a meeting with Tesco and invited the Parish council to attend, however, local residents were not invited to attend. Parish councillors voted unanimously to oppose the application and refuse any offers of financial support from Tesco around the village. Tesco tried to overcome the opposition by offering the first floor of the pub as a community centre.

This pub is sandwiched between a 800 year old church and a 18 century village store. Opposite this pub are smugglers cottages. To make it worse it is situated on the main road between Canterbury and Herne Bay, at the site of a mini roundabout on a very busy and narrow road.
