Campaigning to curb supermarket power

Halstead, Essex

In September 2011 Tesco signed a contract to come to Halstead town centre.

Tesco wants to build a store of  20,000 sq ft and a 200 space car park. Halstead already has 2 in-town supermarkets for a population of only 11,000 and a struggling high street with lots of empty shops.

In October Tesco submitted a planning application. Halstead residents opposed to the plans set up an online petition which gained over 700 signatures.

Tesco's plans refused

The Council received over 170 letters of objection. The grounds for the council's refusal were many but perhaps the overwhelming reason for refusing this plan and the one that so motivated campaigners was the associated loss of woodland, wildlife and 16 well preserved air raid shelters.
