In 2015 residents opposed plans for a Co-op supermarket on the site of the Maypole pub in Halesowen. A campaign group "The Friends of The Maypole" was set up. The group applied for the pub to be listed as a community asset. This would mean the friends group becoming more involved and given first option to buy the pub if it was put up for sale.
The group gathered over 500 signatures on a petition opposing the plans.
In 2013 plans to bulldoze The Swan, Long Lane, and build a supermarket were withdrawn. However, in late July an identical planning was lodged with Dudley Council along with a solicitor’s letter demanding the application be approved. Over 600 residents signed a petition objecting to the plans.
