Critics opposing plans to build an out-of-town supermarket have started a petition to convince the Government to shelve the proposal. Hertford town councillor Jane Sartin started the online campaign against the move, which is likely to see Waitrose relocate from the town to Van Hage, Great Amwell.
She hopes the application, which was approved by East Herts District Council (EHDC) in March, will be called in by the secretary of state, Greg Clark. As councillors voted the application was strong enough to override the authority's planning policies regarding rural developments, he is forced to consider doing this anyway. Miss Sartin is adamant the move will impact on Hertford's economy, and also harbours concerns about traffic and the impact on green belt land.
