Campaigning to curb supermarket power

In 2006-07 residents and traders ran a campaign against a proposal to build a 3,267 sq m Sainsbury's supermarket in Bishopston, Bristol. The application was submitted in January 2007. The campaign group, BOGOFS, Bishopston Opposing Glut Of Supermarkets,  met with Bristol City Council's Planning Department,  distributed over 6,000 window posters and held regular street stalls, fundraising events and public meetings.

Application refused

At a meeting on the 28th November 2007 the Sainsbury's scheme was rejected by the Bristol North planning committee by 10 votes to 1. For information please see the informative campaign website.
