Campaigning to curb supermarket power

Frome, Somerset

Mendip District Council has been looking to bring a comprehensive development on the Saxonvale site in Frome for a number of years, and the developers have been in initial discussions with retailers and supermarkets to create a retail-led mixed use scheme.

A public meeting was held on 1 December 2010 attended by over 400 people. Kevin McCloud of Channel 4′s Grand Designs attended.

In March 2012 a second public debate on the issue was organised. Keep Frome Local’ believe a central supermarket  larger than 15,000 square ft would harm the town centre. Developers, Frontier Estates, has assured the group that there will be a consultation process.
