In 2011 Tesco confirmed it wants to demolish its existing store and build a new bigger store further down the road. In September 2012 a public exhibition of plans for the new Octagon Park development at Angel Drove was held. The scheme includes a Tesco store.The Ely Traders Association has expressed concern at the size of the proposed Tesco store saying it could draw trade away from the centre.

In February 2013 plans to demolish the existing Tesco and build a bigger one  were formally submitted to East Cambs District Council.

New out of town supermarket proposal

Cambridge-based development company, Cambridge Property Group, has submitted a screening opinion to develop around 10 hectares of land in Downham Road - the site currently occupied by the Ely Outdoor Sports Association - to East Cambridgeshire District Council. The proposals involve building a new supermarket, petrol filling station, retail warehousing and a pub/restaurant.

Objections to plans to convert car showroom into supermarket

A developer’s plans to convert a former car showroom and garage in Ely into a new convenience store have met with stiff opposition from neighbours. KDM Enterprises has applied to covert the former Marshall Vauxhalls garage in St Mary’s Street into a retail premises which includes retail floor space, a warehouse, a food preparation area, offices and a staff room.
