In May 2011 planning officers recommended that plans for an Asda store on land at Dewsbury Road and plans for a Morrisons store at the existing NuSwift Factory be refused. The officers state in their report that the proposal is “contrary to Government guidance” and would also fail to enhance the setting of a listed building, as the site is next to Elland Conservation Area and that the proposal is not acceptable and does not tally with policies in Calderdale’s Unitary Development Plan. Please see an article in the Yorkshire Post, 12th May 2011. The Asda plans were first turned down in 2001 and then again in 2007 because of fears the supermarket would crush businesses in the town. Please see an article in the Halifax Courier, 21st November 2007.
In May 2012 Asda's new plans were refused. Councillors on the planning committee ruled that the highways issues a store may create meant the application had to be refused. Please see an article in the Examiner, 4th May 2012.
The planning committee deferred the Asda application, as Asda wanted to submit last minute alterations to their Highways plans. It approved the Morrisons application. Please see an article in the Huddersfield Daily Examiner, 18th May 2011.
